Hands Are More Complicated Than They Look

A hand isn't simply five fingers attached to a palm.

It contains multiple joints, different finger lengths, overlapping surfaces, changing angles, and complex relationships between the fingers, palm, wrist, and arm.

Even a small positional mistake can make the entire hand look wrong.

Compare this with a simple object such as a cup. A cup has a relatively predictable shape. A hand can appear dramatically different depending on whether it is open, closed, holding something, pointing, resting, or viewed from an unusual angle.

Unusual Angles Make the Problem Harder

Hands become particularly difficult when they are close to the camera or positioned at extreme angles.

A finger pointing toward the viewer, for example, can appear much larger than the fingers behind it.

This creates overlapping shapes that are difficult to interpret correctly.

That's why a hand viewed from a straightforward angle may look convincing while the same hand becomes distorted when rotated or partially hidden.

Occlusion Causes Confusion

Occlusion simply means that one object is blocking part of another.

When fingers overlap, the image generator has to determine where one finger ends and another begins. If part of the hand is hidden behind an object, it has even less visible information to work with.

This can lead to fingers merging together, disappearing, or appearing to originate from the wrong location.

Why Extra Fingers Appear

This isn't necessarily because the model doesn't "know" that humans normally have five fingers. The problem is that generating an image involves predicting visual patterns across a two-dimensional image.

When fingers overlap or appear partially hidden, their boundaries can become ambiguous.

The result may contain a visually plausible-looking structure that doesn't correspond to a physically correct hand.

Hands Holding Objects Are Even Harder

A hand holding a phone, cup, weapon, tool, or other object creates another layer of complexity.

The fingers must interact with the object correctly.

They need to wrap around it, make believable contact, and appear to support its weight. The object also needs to remain consistent with the hand's perspective.

If the fingers appear to pass through the object or grip it from an impossible direction, the image immediately feels artificial.

Don't Treat the Hand as an Isolated Object

A convincing hand depends on everything connected to it.

The wrist needs to connect naturally to the forearm. The arm needs to follow the body's pose. The shoulder and elbow need to support that pose.

This means a perfect-looking hand attached to an incorrectly positioned arm can still look unnatural.

Realism comes from the entire anatomical chain working together.

Pose Matters More Than Detail

Adding phrases such as "ultra detailed hands" or "highly realistic fingers" doesn't automatically solve anatomical problems.

A better approach is to establish a clear and physically understandable pose.

For example:

A person standing naturally with both arms relaxed at their sides, hands fully visible, fingers naturally separated and slightly curved.

This gives the image generator a relatively straightforward pose to construct.

Compare that with a complicated instruction involving crossed arms, partially hidden hands, multiple objects, unusual camera perspective, and dramatic movement.

The second scene simply contains more opportunities for errors.

Simple Poses Can Produce Better Results

If hands are important to the image, start with a pose that clearly shows them.

Open palms, relaxed hands, natural gestures, and straightforward positions are generally easier to interpret than extremely complicated poses.

Once the main composition works, you can experiment with more difficult positions.

Reference Images Can Help

When your image generator supports image references, a useful reference can provide additional visual information about pose, perspective, or composition.

Instead of relying entirely on a text description, the model can use the reference as another source of visual context.

This can be particularly helpful for complicated hand positions that are difficult to describe precisely with words.

Don't Overload the Prompt

It's tempting to fight anatomical problems by adding a huge list of restrictions:

  • Five fingers
  • Correct anatomy
  • Natural joints
  • Realistic fingernails
  • Perfect proportions
  • Accurate thumb
  • No extra fingers

Some of these instructions can be useful, but simply stacking them doesn't guarantee a correct result.

The overall pose, camera angle, visibility, and interaction with nearby objects still matter.

Look at the Whole Image

When evaluating an AI-generated hand, don't immediately zoom in to 400%.

First look at the entire image.

Ask whether the pose feels natural, whether the arm connects correctly to the hand, whether the fingers interact properly with surrounding objects, and whether the perspective makes sense.

Sometimes what initially looks like a hand problem is actually a larger composition problem.

AI Image Generation Is Improving

Modern image generators are considerably better at hands than earlier systems were.

But difficult poses, unusual perspectives, heavy occlusion, and complicated interactions can still expose weaknesses.

The important lesson isn't that AI cannot generate realistic hands.

It's that visual complexity increases the number of relationships the model has to get right.

The Bigger Lesson for Image Prompts

Hands are a useful example of a broader principle in AI image generation.

When an image looks wrong, adding more adjectives isn't always the answer.

Sometimes the better solution is to simplify the composition, establish a clearer pose, reduce overlapping elements, or provide better visual context.

Realism isn't created by one magic keyword. It comes from many parts of the image agreeing with one another.
