AI image generators can produce incredibly detailed pictures, yet detail alone doesn't make an image look real.
You can have sharp textures, realistic-looking objects, and impressive lighting, while the overall image still feels artificial. The problem is often not the amount of detail. It's the relationship between the details.
Lighting may not match the environment. Objects may have inconsistent proportions. Materials may look too perfect. Depth may feel wrong. Even small inconsistencies can make an otherwise impressive image immediately recognizable as AI-generated.
Too Much Detail Doesn't Mean More Realism
One of the most common mistakes is trying to make an image realistic by adding as many descriptive words as possible.
Prompts often become packed with phrases such as "ultra detailed," "8K," "masterpiece," "highly detailed," and "hyper realistic."
These words can sometimes influence the visual style, but they don't solve fundamental problems with the scene.
A realistic image needs believable relationships between objects, light, perspective, materials, and environment.
Instead of repeatedly asking for more detail, describe how the scene should behave.

If a person is standing outdoors but the shadows suggest a completely different light source, the image can immediately feel wrong.

A wooden table contains variations in its grain. A wall has small imperfections. Clothing develops folds. Metal develops scratches and subtle changes in reflectivity.
If every surface looks perfectly smooth and untouched, the scene can feel more like a digital render than a photograph.
When appropriate, include realistic imperfections:
- Subtle surface wear
- Natural material variation
- Small scratches
- Uneven textures
- Minor folds and creases
- Dust or environmental buildup
The key is moderation. Adding random damage everywhere doesn't create realism either.
Perspective Has to Make Sense
Another common problem is inconsistent perspective.
Objects positioned at different distances from the camera should appear to have different apparent sizes. Parallel lines should behave consistently with the chosen camera perspective.
If a small object in the foreground appears almost the same size as a much larger object several meters behind it, the scene can feel unnatural.
Instead of describing every object independently, establish the camera perspective first.
Low-angle camera positioned close to the ground, with the foreground object appearing large and the distant buildings gradually decreasing in apparent size.
This gives the generator a clearer spatial relationship to work with.
Depth Makes an Image Feel More Real
Many generated images look like everything exists on the same flat plane.
Real photographs usually contain layers of depth: something close to the camera, the main subject somewhere in the middle, and environmental elements farther away.
Try thinking in three layers:
- Foreground: objects close to the camera
- Middle ground: the main subject or action
- Background: distant environmental elements
This can create a much stronger sense of physical space.
Don't Mix Too Many Visual Styles
A prompt can become confusing when it requests several incompatible styles at once.
For example, combining a documentary photograph, fashion editorial, fantasy painting, architectural visualization, and cinematic film still into one prompt doesn't necessarily create a more sophisticated image.
It can produce a visual identity that feels inconsistent.
Choose the primary visual direction first, then add supporting characteristics.
Describe Materials Properly
Different materials respond to light differently.
Glass, wood, skin, stone, fabric, plastic, and polished metal should not all have the same surface behavior.
Instead of simply writing "realistic texture," describe the material:
Weathered dark wood with visible grain, slightly uneven surface, and areas where the finish has worn away.
Or:
Brushed aluminum with fine directional surface lines and soft environmental reflections.
Specific material descriptions can be more useful than repeatedly asking for realism.
Use a Clear Main Subject
An image becomes harder to control when everything is treated as equally important.
Decide what the viewer should notice first.
Then make the composition, lighting, depth, and background support that subject.
The old lighthouse is the primary focal point. Keep it visually dominant while the surrounding coastline provides environmental context without competing for attention.
This is more useful than simply saying "beautiful cinematic composition."
Don't Overdescribe the Background
A background should support the main subject rather than compete with it.
If every part of the image receives a long list of objects and details, the generator has more opportunities to create visual conflicts.
Sometimes a simple background works better:
Softly blurred forest in the distance with subtle atmospheric haze.
That can provide depth without turning the background into another focal point.
Think Like a Photographer
One useful way to improve image prompts is to think about the image as if you were actually taking the photograph.
Ask:
- Where is the camera?
- How far is it from the subject?
- What lens perspective would make sense?
- Where is the light coming from?
- What is in the foreground?
- What is behind the subject?
- What should the viewer notice first?
These questions often produce more useful prompts than simply adding more visual adjectives.
A Better Prompt Structure
A practical image prompt can follow a simple structure:
Subject → Environment → Composition → Lighting → Materials → Atmosphere → Visual style
For example:
An abandoned wooden cabin beside a remote mountain lake, surrounded by tall pine trees and patches of moss, viewed from a low shoreline perspective. The cabin is the main focal point, with the lake creating a leading line toward it. Soft early-morning sunlight enters from the right, creating long shadows across the grass. Weathered wood, faded paint, damp rocks, and natural vegetation show subtle imperfections. Thin mist hangs above the water. Photorealistic outdoor photography with natural colors and realistic atmospheric depth.
Notice that the prompt doesn't need dozens of generic quality words. It describes how the scene actually looks and behaves.
Realism Comes From Relationships
The most convincing AI-generated images aren't necessarily the ones with the most detail.
They're the ones where the different parts of the image agree with each other.
The light agrees with the shadows. The materials respond appropriately to the light. Perspective agrees with camera position. Objects have believable scale. The background supports the subject. Small imperfections prevent everything from looking artificially perfect.
That is why improving an image prompt isn't simply about adding more words.
It's about giving the generator a clearer visual world to construct.
