An AI-generated image can have sharp details, realistic skin, convincing lighting, and an impressive amount of texture—and still look obviously artificial.

Don't Make Every Object Equally Important

The main subject is sharp.

Tell the model what should dominate the frame and allow secondary elements to remain less prominent.

If you're trying to create something that looks like a photograph, describing the photographic situation can be more useful than repeatedly saying "photorealistic."

- Lighting direction
- Depth of field
- Focus distance
- Time of day
- Weather
- Environmental conditions

That's a much more specific visual target than simply adding "8K photorealistic."
Use Specific Imperfections Instead of “Make It Realistic”

This gives the model specific problems to correct.
Realism Is About Relationships
The most convincing AI images aren't necessarily the ones with the most detail.
They're the ones where the visual relationships make sense.
Light interacts with surfaces. Objects occupy believable spaces. Materials behave differently. Foreground and background have depth. Imperfections appear where they naturally would.
That is why a relatively simple prompt can sometimes produce a more convincing image than a paragraph packed with words like "ultra-detailed," "8K," and "photorealistic."
A Better Way to Prompt for Realism
Instead of thinking:
How can I make this image more detailed?
ask:
What would make this scene behave more like a real photograph?
Then describe those things.
Lighting. Materials. Spatial relationships. Focus. Environmental conditions. Imperfections. Movement or signs of use.
If you work with different AI image generators, these principles can be applied across models rather than depending on one specific tool or a collection of magic keywords.
And when an image already looks realistic but still feels artificial, don't immediately add more detail. Find the visual relationship that feels wrong and describe how it should behave instead.
